UofL one step closer to 6.4 percent budget cut, as bill passes Ky. Senate

FRANKFORT – The University of Louisville is one step closer to receiving a 6.4 percent overall funding cut in fiscal year 2013.

House Bill 265 has passed through the Kentucky state Senate with one amendment, carrying the executive branch’s suggested cuts to higher education funding. U of L president James Ramsey reported earlier this year a 6.4 percent cut would mean a loss of over $9 million to the school. Ramsey also warned student scholarships could be cut as a result.

HB 265 and Senate Committee Amendment 1 now return to the House of Representatives for concurrence. If the House does not concur with SCA1, both chambers will go into a Conference Committee to negotiate the bill before it can be signed into law by Governor Steve Beshear.
