A common dilemma many students face when beginning their college careers out of high school is figuring out how to stay in shape while adjusting to a new schedule.

The Student Activities Center’s fitness center offers a variety of different activities to help keep students in shape, including an accessible weight room stocked with treadmills, free and machine weight systems and other cardiovascular equipment.

“In the Louisville Metropolitan area, this [SAC] is one of the best facilities around,” Ken Carey, gym employee, said. “The vast array of equipment and stuff that this facility has here along with the facilities at the Crawford and Humana, it can’t be beat.”

The SAC is open weekdays from 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and is free with an active student ID.

The SAC fitness center also provides five racquetball courts, two squash courts and complete locker room facilities along with four multi-purpose gym floors which are used for basketball, volleyball and badminton.

“It offers pretty much everything you want,” Greg Welsh, junior nursing major, said. “They have a gym, basketball courts, racquetball and they’re always open when you need them to be so it’s pretty convenient.”

For those looking to keep themselves occupied in some competitive form or just looking for a way to blow off some steam without all the sweat, the Cardinal Corner might be the answer. Also located in the SAC, the Cardinal Corner provides an assortment of free games for students to compete in, including pool, ping-pong, air hockey and foosball.

The Ralph Wright Natatorium, located on the corner of Warnock Ave. and Floyd St., is one for the newest facilities on campus and allows students a chance to swim in an Olympic-size pool. The Natatorium is also home to the U of L’s men’s and women’s swim teams and is complete with an eight-lane, 50 meter competition pool with depth ranging from four feet, six inches to 18 feet.

“It’s really a great facility,” Matt Blanford, graduate student and lifeguard, said. “It’s brand new and I think students are surprised when they find out that it’s even here and they’re allowed to use it for free.”

The Natatorium is open from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and is also open at various times on weekends.

The Humana Gym is another facility available for students looking to work out. Located on Bradley Ave. and Eastern Pkwy., the Humana Gym offers complete weight and cardiovascular rooms, dry heat saunas and gym floors are available when not used for club practices. Free for students, the Humana Gym is open from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

U of L also offers a variety of different sports clubs and intramural league sports which provide students looking for a more structured plan to help maintain a healthy lifestyle, a solid solution while satisfying their competitive juices.

With clubs like badminton, fencing, gymnastics and many others, students are given the opportunity to compete while receiving a chance to learn a new sport or continuing to play a familiar one. There are also many different intramural league sports students can play including football, basketball, and soccer.

The warm brick building with its red, blue, and gold neon beer lights looks like a safe haven compared to the frigid bite that is the midnight Louisville air.
Conversations go on at each table despite the bass in Kanye West's "Love Lockdown" resonating in the background. There seems to be more television sets than people inside the Granville Inn, located at Third and Gaulbert streets in Old Louisville, at this moment.

The finals week extended hours for Ekstrom Library are being taken advantage of by both undergraduate and graduate students. The front of Tulip Tree café was well-lit and wide-awake in the midst of the dark midnight surrounding it.
Senior psychology major Brendan Byrne stepped out for a smoke in front and enjoyed the serene outside for a quick break during his late-night study session.
Byrne said he enjoys the extra time to study at night.
"I've seen the sun rise in this library at least 10 times," he said.

Air vents and buzzing fluorescent lights are the only sounds of the Houchens building at 2 in the morning.
Although insignificant during the daytime hours, the sounds dance throughout the off-white colored walls and faded multi color tile floors in the bathroom.
The building of many face lifts over the years – new walls, windows and such – but it retains its funky, 1970s flashback, look. Nice touches to the inside of what many know as "the yellow brick building."

It's a little early to be at the Student Activities Center on a Saturday.
With chilling 34 degree winds and a ballet of snow performing outside of the SAC's first floor terrace, providing early morning entertainment, the inside remains barren, with the exception of workers preparing for their morning shift.

It's 4:12 in the morning and the telephone rings, startling 50-year-old Carolyn Drury.
She almost spills her coffee, but manages to gently place her candy cane decorated mug on her desk. Swiftly turning her chair, she puts on her headset and begins speaking.
"U of L Help Desk, may I have your user ID please?" she says to the caller. "This is Carolyn, how can I help you?"
It's a male student requesting information regarding his e-mail account. He's in his dorm room, sloppily slurring his words as his inebriation becomes evident through the telephone line.

As the two o'clock hour rolled around, a glare from a silver Oldsmobile's window pierced two different sets of glass windows and traveled into the Student Government Association's office on the third floor of the Student Activities Center.

The smell of popcorn fills the air. Sounds of a salesman's voice are muffled behind the rustling of fans entering Freedom Hall. There is a different feeling in the atmosphere throughout the entire city. It is game day for the University of Louisville men's basketball team.
At noon, the floor is still not ready for the 2 p.m. game. The ground crew rushes to put the finishing touches on the court, which had to be reassembled after an event in the building late the night before.

The tile floor gleams ever so brightly, but it won't stay that way for long. The first customers of the morning, along with their scuff marks, have already started trickling in, but that's normal; they're the "usuals" at McDonald's on the corner of Floyd and Warnock streets.
They enter with looks of exhaustion and relief, their faces blushed from the 40-degree chill outside. Now they're here for their morning coffee and paper, catching up on the world that they must become a part of once their cups are empty.

At 8 p.m. on Tuesday, "My Sweet Song" by Toby Lightman echoes through the maroon doors of Miller Residence Hall's girl's fourth floor and into the hallway. Freshman undecided major Tamara Gilreath sits in her wooden desk chair and awaits a phone call from her roommate.
"I'm waiting to go to my sorority intramural bowling game," Gilreath says.
