On October 11th, in conjunction with the Student Activity BoardÕs Sports Illustrated Day, Housing and Residence Life will be selling “United We Stand” Flags on the West Lawn of the SAC at 11:30 p.m., officially kicking off “Project Pledge.”

The purpose of the event is to encourage every resident to hang a $2.00 flag in their window in order to show support for those affected by the tragedies of September 11 and to build a scholarship fund for one high school senior who lost a loved one in the attacks. Not only are residents encouraged to participate, but all university sponsored organizations, departments, offices and groups.

After the money is raised there will be an opportunity within each residence hall for students to write an essay expressing their thoughts about the events of September 11th. The student who writes the winning essay in each hall will then have a chance to participate in a memorial service in the spring by either reading their work or helping with another need.

The ultimate goal of the project is not only provide money for a high school student who lost someone in the tragedies, but to “provide the same freedom we have to be educated to another deserving student.” The student can be from anywhere in the nation, but will most likely be from New York. Housing and Residence Life will also be working with the Admissions Office to find the most deserving student.

On campus, there is support for the project. Joanne Kluthe, a senior math major, said: “I think itÕs a very good idea that theyÕre trying to help someone affected by the tragedies.” Patrick Lonneman, a senior mechanical engineering major, added: “I think itÕs a great idea. It shows support for the cause and that the campus cares about those affected.”
