The onset of fall brings with it flu season; University of Louisville Campus Health Services is providing multiple mobile flu shot clinics throughout the semester to administer flu vaccines to students.

A nurse’s perspective

The flu shot clinic’s first stop was at the Cardinal Stadium parking lot from Sept. 23 to Sept. 24. Alicia Snellen-Schulten, a licensed practical nurse with Campus Health Services, was administering on-site flu shots on the morning of Sept. 24. She spoke about how she came to the position.

“In 2020, I did COVID tests with the Campus Health Services,” said Snellen-Schulten. “I took a full-time position with U of L, and they asked me while doing the COVID tests if I was interested in doing flu vaccines, and I said yes.”

Snellen-Schulten emphasizes the importance of college students getting flu shots and encourages students to get the flu vaccine.

“You all are so close together, college students don’t pay attention to their bodies, they don’t realize that they can carry diseases,” said Snellen-Schulten. “The flu vaccine is another layer of protection.”

Convenience for students

The mobile clinic was set up next to the purple lot, near where TARC buses take students to the Belknap campus. The mobile setting adds many benefits to the process.

“It’s convenient, accessible and fast-paced, people come in and out,” said Snellen-Schulten. “In a traditional setting, you have to go to the location, which takes longer.”

Hundreds of students park in the purple lot, allowing them to get the vaccine without going out of their way if they choose.

While the mobile flu shot clinic will not return to the Cardinal Stadium parking lot this year, Campus Health Services will continue administering the service at multiple campus locations through Nov. 10.
