On Aug. 23, two 20-year-old mothers were killed in a fatal shooting in front of U of L’s Family Scholar House. Both victims, Iyanna Warr and Trinity Durham, were pronounced dead at the scene by EMS.
University of Louisville community members received SafeZone alerts on the night of the shooting. Residents who lived near the Family Scholar House were told to shelter in place from 2:14 a.m. to 4:52 a.m.
Camryn McNeal, a Ladybird in her junior year, shared her experience with the news.
“Originally, I was in disbelief. I was woken from my sleep by my frantic mother calling me from 600 miles away,” McNeal said. “After seeing many missed calls from my family and friends, I reached back to understand what was happening.”
For McNeal, the incident brought up safety concerns on campus.
“These two black women were murdered in cold blood, on a street I walk past every day,” said McNeal. “Though this didn’t occur directly on campus, it wasn’t far from campus. It begs the question if we will ever have a sanctioned space with peace and unity.”
Larita Firman, a student who commutes to campus, reached out to friends who lived in the area.
Firman hopes that the event will lead to unity amongst the U of L community.
“We should never stop speaking our minds. The University of Louisville is the place for diversity, exploration and creativity,” Firman said. “As students our job to it’s our job to implement safety for us and those around us.”
