Women’s soccer snapped their two-game winning streak on Sunday afternoon,  defeating Miami 1-0 at Lynn Stadium.

The game looked to be headed for overtime, but a beautiful strike by freshman Emina Ekic in the 83rd minute gave the Cards their first ACC win of the season. Louisville improves to 7-4-0 on the year.

“I was really happy with our wide players’ ability to recreate width and get around the outside and serve,” Louisville head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes said. “Super happy with their effort, their will and really love the players that came off the bench. We call those players our game changers, and they absolutely affected the game for us positively today.”

The game was end-to-end at the start, but neither side could make much of the possession. Louisville came the closest to scoring in the 13th minute on a free kick. Emina Ekic curled her shot over the wall, but Miami goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce was able to tip the ball over the bar.

Louisville started to dominate the game as the half went on, but was lacking the final ball.

The Cards went close again in the 31st minute when Mollie Rouse ran a ran down the right flank. Brooklynn Rivers met Rouse’s cross, but her shot was high.

Despite nine first-half shots, Tullis-Joyce kept Miami in the game. The second half was much of the same, this time with shots coming at a premium.

Louisville finally broke through with Ekic in the 83rd minute. The Hurricanes dealt with the Cardinal pressure very well for much of the second half. But Ekic made something out of nothing with her left-footed strike chipping Tullis-Joyce.

“It was a matter of time,” Ferguson-Dayes said. “We kept knocking on the door. Their goalkeeper is fantastic. But I felt that if we keep on going after it, that it would be a matter of time.”

Ekic led the way with five shots, with Rouse second next three.

The Cards welcome Duke to Lynn Stadium to conclude their three-match homestand. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
