Five on-campus dining venues received “C” ratings when the Louisville Metro Health Department inspected 19 venues March 6.

Papa John’s, Wendy’s and the Cardinal Burger Company had improper hand washing procedures. Mein Bowl was not cooling cooked rice correctly. Sandella’s did not have hot water.

According to U of L spokesperson John Drees, Sodexo immediately fixed the issues at the first four locations. Sandella’s got a new hot water heater and reopened March 9.

“This continuing pattern is unacceptable. We have conveyed our concerns to top officials at Sodexo,” said Mitchell Payne, senior associate vice president for finance and administration, in an email to the Cardinal.

The Ville Grill received an “A” rating on Monday’s inspection. The eatery has received three “C” ratings in the past four years – in 2012, 2014 and most recently in October.

The other 14 locations inspected received “A” ratings. The Health Department considers an “A” rating to be passing, with a “C” being failing. The department reevaluates cited locations within seven to 10 days to check for improvements.

“Health and safety of our students, faculty and staff is our top priority,” Payne said. “We will do everything in our power to ensure these issues are addressed.”
