Strong-armed robbery near campus sends one student to hospital

On Friday, Jan. 16 around 12:55 a.m., two U of L students walking between Third Street and Bloom Street were approached by two armed men demanding money. Both students were struck in the head before the armed men fled the scene in a Range Rover.

LMPD responded to the scene, and one victim was sent to U of L Hospital for treatment.

Shortly after, U of L police stopped the Range Rover at the intersection of Cardinal Boulevard and Second Street for a traffic violation.

The officer connected the vehicle and its passengers, William D. Sanderlin and Ihmanuel C. Fields, to the strong-armed robbery case.

Sanderlin and Fields were positively identified by the victims and taken into custody by the LMPD.

Assistant Chief of Police for ULPD, Kenny Brown, said that the offenders were not U of L students.

Although the incident happened close to Belknap campus, students did not receive a Rave notification at the time of the incident.

“There was no Rave alert out because there was an immediate capture, so there was no threat to campus,” said Brown.

Brown was not aware of the current condition of the student that was sent to the hospital.
