U of L celebrated the sixth annual Campus Sustainability Day this past Wednesday. The event was just one event held on-campus during Campus Sustainability Week.

Various groups from the community and campus came together as their celebrated Campus Sustainability Day in the Humanities Quad and shared their knowledge of going green. U of L’s multiple transportation alternatives were featured at the event. Students were able to receive individual instructions in how to use U of L’s Bike Fix-It Stations and where also encouraged to bring their bike for a tune-up.

Byron Terry is a senior and he has a passion for going green. “Going green is so easy that everyone should do it. If everyone recycled, the world would be a better place,” stated Terry.

Campus Sustainability Day is a worldwide celebration of the efforts of universities to integrate sustainability practices on campus by engaging staff, students and the community in activities focused on learning how to work towards a sustainable future.

The event also provided an opportunity to highlight energy-efficiency improvements going on at U of L.

Other events during the week included a mini-farmer’s market, model green room tours and the dedication of the Urban and Public Affairs horticultural zone.

“The point of Sustainability Week is to help everyone at U of L get a glimpse of how each and every one of us can begin to create that bright green future today,” said Justin Mog, assistant to the provost for sustainability initiatives. “It is up to us to change course and it’s high time we start doing something about it. Events all week long have shown us how to get started – whether it’s eating less meat and more local food, driving less, buying less stuff, sending less junk to the landfill, volunteering in the community, or conserving electricity.”
