Editor’s Note: This is a fictional look at what an article may have looked like had the Cardinals lived up to the preseason hype. All quotes and stats are manufactured for the purpose of the column.

“I plan to start tailgating Thursday morning around 7 a.m.,” said senior marketing major Sam Adams. “Four of my friends and I are driving out to Morgantown Wednesday. Screw class, this is the biggest game in Cardinal history.”

It is obvious that the University of Louisville fans are ready to take on Big East foe West Virginia University in Morgantown this Thursday at 7:30. It appears that the team is equally excited.

“This is the type of game that made me come back for my senior season,” said Heisman trophy front runner Brian Brohm. “We did a good job of not underestimating any of the teams we played early on, but we have had Nov. 8 circled since day one.”

U of L appears to have kept the swagger that took them to an Orange Bowl victory last year, rolling through their first nine games of the season with relative ease, taking down the upstart University of Cincinnati and surprising the University of Kentucky on the road.

“It is just amazing to be a part of all this and to have a team that plays so hard and is dedicated to winning,” said head coach Steve Kragthorpe who received a standing ovation from the crowd of 45,000 at the Homecoming game. “We know that West Virginia is a good team, but we know we are as well. I’m just excited for some good football.”

The Mountaineers, like the Cardinals, have rolled through their schedule, beating every team by at least two touchdowns. The talented duo of junior quarterback Pat White and junior running back Steve Slaton have fueled the second most productive scoring offense in the nation at 43 points per game.

Just ahead of West Virginia is U of L at 45 ppg. While the Cardinals had a known vertical threat with preseason All-Americans Brohm and senior wide out Harry Douglas, it has been the ground game that has been hitting pay dirt.

“After running for 275 yards in the Middle Tennessee State game I just hit my stride,” said sophomore running back Anthony Allen, a Heisman candidate who leads the Big East with 1,456 yards and 14 touchdowns. “I just go out there and give it my all every day. I run hard in practice and do the same in the games. Football has just been a lot of fun this year.”

Fans tend to agree with Allen that football has been fun.

“Football has made my first semester here unforgettable, said freshman biology major Courtney Cardinal. “Tailgating is amazing. You see so many students out there and everyone is having so much fun. I can’t wait to go tailgate in West Virginia, all the students are going and my teachers gave us permission to skip class on Thursday.”

For those not making the road trip, the game will be televised on ESPN. Last year’s match up between the undefeated Cardinals and undefeated Mountaineers was the second most watched college football game in ESPN history.

…Ok, ok I need to stop, this is killing me. If you get bored during class you can go through and find out how many errors there are. It’s like Where’s Waldo?, but each time you find one you get a little more depressed. Remember, U of L offers free psychiatric services at the Campus Health Center located directly adjacent to Houchens building.
