A common dilemma many students face when beginning their college careers out of high school is figuring out how to stay in shape while adjusting to a new schedule.

The Student Activities Center’s fitness center offers a variety of different activities to help keep students in shape, including an accessible weight room stocked with treadmills, free and machine weight systems and other cardiovascular equipment.

“In the Louisville Metropolitan area, this [SAC] is one of the best facilities around,” Ken Carey, gym employee, said. “The vast array of equipment and stuff that this facility has here along with the facilities at the Crawford and Humana, it can’t be beat.”

The SAC is open weekdays from 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and is free with an active student ID.

The SAC fitness center also provides five racquetball courts, two squash courts and complete locker room facilities along with four multi-purpose gym floors which are used for basketball, volleyball and badminton.

“It offers pretty much everything you want,” Greg Welsh, junior nursing major, said. “They have a gym, basketball courts, racquetball and they’re always open when you need them to be so it’s pretty convenient.”

For those looking to keep themselves occupied in some competitive form or just looking for a way to blow off some steam without all the sweat, the Cardinal Corner might be the answer. Also located in the SAC, the Cardinal Corner provides an assortment of free games for students to compete in, including pool, ping-pong, air hockey and foosball.

The Ralph Wright Natatorium, located on the corner of Warnock Ave. and Floyd St., is one for the newest facilities on campus and allows students a chance to swim in an Olympic-size pool. The Natatorium is also home to the U of L’s men’s and women’s swim teams and is complete with an eight-lane, 50 meter competition pool with depth ranging from four feet, six inches to 18 feet.

“It’s really a great facility,” Matt Blanford, graduate student and lifeguard, said. “It’s brand new and I think students are surprised when they find out that it’s even here and they’re allowed to use it for free.”

The Natatorium is open from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and is also open at various times on weekends.

The Humana Gym is another facility available for students looking to work out. Located on Bradley Ave. and Eastern Pkwy., the Humana Gym offers complete weight and cardiovascular rooms, dry heat saunas and gym floors are available when not used for club practices. Free for students, the Humana Gym is open from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

U of L also offers a variety of different sports clubs and intramural league sports which provide students looking for a more structured plan to help maintain a healthy lifestyle, a solid solution while satisfying their competitive juices.

With clubs like badminton, fencing, gymnastics and many others, students are given the opportunity to compete while receiving a chance to learn a new sport or continuing to play a familiar one. There are also many different intramural league sports students can play including football, basketball, and soccer.

A new place to call a Cardinal home

In only 607 days, the University of Louisville men's and women's basketball teams will have a new address on Main Street, Second Street, Third Street and River Road.  Early November 2010 is the scheduled completion date for the new downtown arena the Cardinals will call home.

‘Sex In The Dark'

Miss U of L, Ashley Miller,  will host a special event with free admission and food, March 3 at 7 p.m. This event brings awareness about common myths and misconceptions about sex in a FUN and INTERESTING way. Students must bring a student ID to participate. The event will take place at SAC Floyd Theater. 

Open House for U of L School of Public Health and Info Sciences

An open house will be held to showcase the renovation of the
old Home of the Innocents building to house the new home of the
University of Louisville School of Public Health and Information

Nominate for U of L Student Awards Now

Each year the Division of Student Affairs coordinates the recognition of achievements made by our university students, student organizations, and advisers. Students, faculty and staff are given the opportunity to make nominations of students and student organizations deserving of recognition for the awards.
Information about the awards and nominations can be found at  www.louisville.edu/dos/studentawards.  Nominations are due by March 11. The Awards will be presented on April 13 at 7 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of the SAC.

Orientation 2009: Attention RSO Leaders

LGBT represents Women in Community

Please join activists, scholars, students, artists and others in the second annual LGBT Voices at the Red Barn Tues., March 10 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
This event seeks to help build a common voice of justice as we celebrate multiple perspectives in the LGBT movement. The night will feature spoken word, a digital storytelling project about Don't Ask Don't Tell, belly dancing by Taletha, and S.H.E.!, a women's choreo-poetry group.  
Those in attendance will get the opportunity to talk with a broad coalition of groups and organizations that will be tabling this event. The first LGBT Voices event in 2007 gathered approximately 100 people, this year we hope to exceed this number. Light refreshments will be available.

New Recognition Program for Community Engagement

Provost Shirley Willihnganz announced the first annual recognition program for faculty, staff, students and community partners who are involved in outstanding community engagement service.

U of L’s Health Services strive to meet student needs first

United States college health services billing practices have been questioned, but University of Louisville is striving to make the student's needs come first.
According to Chad Henderson, president of the American College Health Association and director at University of Rhode Island's health services, college health care can range from a single nurse facility to a full-scale ambulatory care clinic; each one having their own stipulations on insurance, accommodations and available treatment.

Reinventing the story

On Tues., Feb. 20, the Louisville Axton Fellowship Reading Series welcomed rising experimental literary star Helen Philips to the University.
Phillips, who has published in such prestigious publications as "The L Magazine", "The Brooklyn Review", and "The Yale Literary Magazine," read from her latest piece; a compilation novel composed of 175 stories. Each story is exactly 340 words.


Alcohol sales may fill soccer seats

After the recent success of student spirit and support at University of Louisville baseball games, the U of L Athletic Department, as well as the Student Government Association are looking for ways to extend the spirit to other sports. One idea which has been looked into is the possibility of regulated sales of alcohol at events at Cardinal Park, more specifically, soccer games.

Supercomputer comes to U of L

Fast enough to make 25 trillion calculations a second, and tasked with finding a cure to cancer, the new cluster computing system at the Miller I.T. Center has plenty of high expectations.
The $2.1 million Cardinal Research Cluster supercomputer has been running since Jan. 29, and is expected to be full operational next month.


Two arrests made for campus crimes

University of Louisville Police Department joined forces with the Louisville Metro Police Department and cracked down on campus criminal activity.
Lt. Col. Kenny Brown of DPS said Willis McClain, a person of interest in two on-campus robberies and at least 12 acts of aggressive panhandling at the Student Activities Center, was arrested on Feb. 16 after being pulled over by LMPD on an unrelated charge.
