It’s that time of year again when blood, guts and nostalgia combine to create what can only be described as Halloween. ’Tis the season of falling leaves, ridiculous costume parties and scary movies.Your fondest autumnal memories may involve fending off the cold weather with a cup of hot chocolate and a classic horror film to kick off the holidays. So sit back, pop a bag of popcorn and let’s begin our top five Halloween movies this year.
1. “Halloween” (1978)
The title says it all, and that’s why it deserves its place at number oneon the list. The season of scares wouldn’t be complete without watching this classic slasher film with family and friends. Jamie Lee Curtis stole the show with her incredible performance that still sets the precedence for scary movies everywhere.
2.”The Nightmare Before Christmas” (1993)
Arguably Tim Burton’s most famous creative masterpiece, “The Nightmare Before Christmas” fuses Halloween and Christmas with wicked stop motion animation and a demented soundtrack by Danny Elfman.
Prepare for the two best holidays of the year with the classic movie. And if you just can’t wait for either holiday, why not enjoy them both at the same time? It’s showing at the Regal New Albany Stadium 16 on Oct. 27-30.
3. “Coraline” (2009)
While it may not be considered the go-to Halloween flick, Henry Selick’s incredible stop motion animation techniques bring this movie to a whole new level of creepy. If you enjoy falling down the rabbit hole and talking cats, put Coraline high on your list this season.
4. “Beetlejuice” (1988)
Nothing screams Halloween more than a Tim Burton film. His movies have a fanbase of diehard supporters, and Beetlejuice is no exception. The surrealist lunacy of Michael Keaton as Betelgeuse kicks off the season of horror with debilitating slapstick comedy.
5. “Hocus Pocus” (1993)
Ah, Hocus Pocus. The movie that brings back memories of no collegiate responsibilities and when Trick or Treating was the “in” thing to do. This quintessential (and unashamedly cheesy) holiday classic is sure to bring back some childhood nostalgia.
