Global Initiatives and the Peace, Justice, and Conflict Transformation Program held a Hunger Banquet, an event meant to foster an understanding of the disparity between the social classes on March 9.

Emma Jacobs set the night’s tone with a startling statistic: “46.5 million Americans live in poverty… 20 percent of children in the US live below the poverty line.”

By randomly assigning either a red, green or blue dot to differentiate between stages of economic development, students got a small taste of structural economic struggles.

Students were given different seating and food depending on their color. If you were lucky enough to score a red dot, you were granted express seating and service, receiving food on a silver platter with a ‘yes, ma’am’ and ‘no, sir.’ Conversely, a green dat merited a cozy spot on the hard floor with small cups of beans and rice.
