Two days after news of a whistleblower lawsuit against President James Ramsey broke, a U of L official called the allegations “unfounded.”

Executive Vice President for Research and Innovation William Pierce emailed a statement, saying “the University and the President are strongly committed to a robust and comprehensive compliance program.”

Conflict of Interest officer Robin Wilcox filed suit Feb. 29, claiming Ramsey was guilty of “official misconduct” and knew of FBI investigations regarding misuse of grant money for over a year prior to telling the university. Wilcox also claimed he was forced to resign, saying the working conditions were becoming increasingly “hostile and abusive.”

“We think it is important to note that no one at the University suggested or requested that he resign,” Pierce’s email said. “His resignation was entirely voluntary.”

Pierce directly discussed Wilcox’s claim that Ramsey knew about allegations of U of L officials misusing grant money, saying it is incorrect. “The possibility of misconduct – as opposed to a manageable conflict of interest – came to the University’s attention, as reported, in mid-2014.”

Pierce said the U of L Foundation supports the compliance policies, adding it is common for ULF to request a seat on the board of directors for all investments.

“We look forward to the opportunity to provide the facts and to respond fully in the course of litigation,” Pierce said.
