Facing one of the most lethal attacks in women’s collegiate soccer, Louisville pulled off a historic upset over top-ranked North Carolina on Thursday night at Lynn Stadium.

Caroline Kimble scored the game winning goal off a penalty kick from Hannah Konermann with nine seconds left in the first overtime period.

“I stood still in disbelief, it was surreal,” head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes said.”It is the biggest goal I have ever scored,” Kimble said.

The dramatic comeback victory marks the program’s first victory over a top-ranked team.

North Carolina had a steady wave of attacks throughout the game, totaling 30 shots while Louisville had only six.

“They were attacking the entire game, but I knew I had to keep pushing,” Kimble said. “I knew we could pull through and we did.”

Goalkeeper Taylor Bucklin was active all night, including two late saves in regulation.  The junior finished with eight saves.

“We went out there not scared and not intimidate,” Bucklin said. “We went out there to win.”

The Tar Heels broke the scoring seal with nearly ten minutes left before halftime, but Louisville quickly responded three minutes into the second half with a goal by Gabrielle Vincent off a penalty kick by Hannah Konermann.

Louisville’s third consecutive victory improved the Cardinals to 7-5 overall and 3-2 in the ACC.  Louisville faces Duke on Sunday at Lynn Stadium.
