The University of Louisville tipped off the first of their Red-White Intrasquad scrimmages on Oct. 3.

In a change from the past, teams and the score reset during halftime.
Sophomore forward Jaylen Johnson was the most active, posting 20 points and 18 rebounds. Freshman guard Donovan Mitchell had 19 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Another notable player was sophomore center Anas Mahmoud with 21 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks.
“For a one-day practice, I thought the guys did very well,” Head Coach Rick Pitino said. “These games let them understand how it is playing in a big arena and get a lot of the jitters out, but what I saw tonight and from practice was a lot of good things.”
In the first half, the white team starters consisted of Quentin Snider, Trey Lewis, Damion Lee, Jaylen Johnson and Chinanu Onuaku. The red team had David Levitch, Donovan Mitchell, Deng Adel, Raymond Spalding and Anas Mahmoud to start it off. The white had the red team pull out with a 49-36 outcome.
David Levitch played calm and controlled at the point. He, along with Mahmoud, led the red team with 10 points in the first half. Freshman forward Adel added nine points and five rebounds and received praise from Pitino after the game.
“You’re going to see a lot of Damion (Lee) at the two and Deng (Adel) at the three, because Deng is the best defensive player on the team and, like Donovan Mitchell, he’s a stat-stuffer. He’s very good,” said Pitino.
Fellow freshman Mitchell added that Adel was the hardest player to guard because of his length, strength and basketball IQ.
For the white team, senior transfers Lee and Lewis only added nine points, five rebounds and two assists while turning the ball over six times. Onuaku and Johnson carried the team with 19 points and 15 rebounds.
In the second half, the white team starters were Snider, Lee, Adel, Spalding and Mahmoud. The red team starting five were Lewis, Levitch, Mitchell, Johnson and Onuaku. The red team would edge the white team again with 45-43 with Mitchell leading all scorers with 13.
Lewis found the basket after a rough first half and scored 11 points while Johnson kept up the activity with nine points and eight rebounds. Lee and Mahmoud would carry the white team with 11 points each.
After the game, sophomore guard Quentin Snider spoke about his role and his fear about the lack of alley oops this season. “They want more from me. They want me to speak up and be more vocal, and that’s something I’ll do. I don’t think it’ll be any change. Last year it was mainly just Trez (Harrell), and now we got Ray, Donovan and Deng, so we’ll be fine.”
As a team Louisville made 46 out of 61 free throw attempts—75 percent. That’s good news, since the team struggled at the line all last year. The team is also much longer than previous years, but still must work on the little things before reaching expectations set by previous years.
