In front of a sold-out crowd at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium, Louisville fell to eleventh-ranked Clemson 20-17 in another heartbreaking loss to drop the Cardinals to 0-3 on the season.

Missed kick: Trailing 20-17, Louisville started a drive on their own 14 yard line with 6:34 left in the fourth quarter. Kyle Bolin drove the Cardinals down to the 21 yard line, setting up a game tying 38-yard field goal attempt. Senior kicker John Wallace missed the kick wide left, and Clemson took over with 2:28 left.

QB 1: The third different starting quarterback in as many games, Bolin trotted out with the first team on the opening possession. The sophomore completed 19 of 34 passes for 234 yards. Bolin was sacked five times and threw two interceptions. The offensive line struggled to protect Bolin, but he did make a few good deep throws including a 55-yard pass to Jaylen Smith.

100: After Clemson made a 27-yard field goal putting the Tigers up 20-10, freshman Traveon Samuel returned the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown. The momentum swing cut the Clemson lead to 20-17 and charged the home crowd with just under ten minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Struggles: Once again, the offensive line struggled to run block and pass protect. Brandon Radcliffe was held to 45 yards on 19 carries, and Bolin was sacked five times. Louisville averaged just 0.7 yards per carry and 19 yards rushing on the game. Josh Appleby netted more yards on his punts (seven punts for 274 yards) than total yards of offense (272).

Stopping the run: Louisville defense wasn’t able to contain Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson and running back Wayne Gallman. The Tigers racked up 202 rushing yards and averaged 5.1 yards per carry. Gillman rushed for 139 yards. Watson added another 54 yards.

3rd downs: The Cardinals couldn’t stay on the field, converting two of 14 third downs.

Ball skills: Cornerback Shaq Wiggins pulled in his first career interception as a Cardinal on the second play of the second half. Wiggins made a nice play on the ball and then returned it for 16 yards. This turnover set up a nine play 58-yard drive to put Louisville ahead 10-7 in the third quarter.

What’s Next: Louisville will face Samford next Saturday at 6 p.m. at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium.
