Louisville head coach Jeff Walz anticipated a slug-fest and the Cardinals won the battle he believed was coming.
Louisville defeated Pittsburgh 48-35 on Sunday afternoon at the KFC YUM! Center to improve to 20-3 on the year.
Sara Hammond registered her 18th career double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Shawnta’ Dyer added 11 points and eight rebounds.
The Cardinals defense was stifling, holding Pitt (15-8) to 13 of 62 from the field and totaling 13 steals.
Pitt guard Brianna Kiesel went into Sunday averaging 18 points per game, but the Cardinal defense held her to two points on 1 of 13 shooting.
“Our whole goal tonight was not to let her beat us,” Walz said. “Somebody else was going to have to step up and make a bunch of shots for them.”
Louisville led 34-32 with 7:26 left before going on a 10-0 run over a six minute span to seal the game.
