On Thursday afternoon the U of L Men and Women’s Swim and Dive team hosted the University of Tennessee.
The schools would split wins on the day with the men defeating the Tennessee Volunteers for the first time in
school history with a score of 167.5-132.5. The women’s team competed against a Tennessee squad that finished
third overall in the NCAA last year and respectfully fell to the Lady Vols 170-130.
For the men senior Kameron Chastain took first in 100-breast and was part of the winning 200-medley team
relay. Defending national champion senior Joao De Lucca won the 100- and 200-freestyle. Freshman Josh Quallen
took home his first events with the 100- and 200-butterfly. For the women junior Tanja Kyllainen was the only
multiple event winner as she took the 200 butterfly and 200m. Erica Belcher also won the 200-backstroke, Kelsi
Worrell won the 100 butterfly, and Emily Stalmack won in the 3-meter diving competition.
The first Cardinal win of the meet came from the men’s side in the 200-medley relay with the team consisting
of Grigory Tarasevich, Pedro Coutinho, Kameron Chastain, and Caryle Blondell. The women’s team of Krissie
Brandenburg, Andrea Kneppers, and Lucy Kramer Kelsie Worrell would place second.
The women would post second place in five events and won six. The 400-free relay was won by Kelsi Worrell,
Breann McDowell, Rachael Lewis, and Andrea Kneppers. The men took home a total of 11 second place finishes
while winning six events.
The men now move on to a 2-0 record and the women take a step back with a 1-1 record. The next event will be
against University of North Carolina at Chapell Hill on November 1-2.
