Comfortable. Welcoming. Nostalgic. These are all words that owner Brooke Vaughn said she wanted people to feel when they walked into her new café, located on 800 East Market Street. “I want people to feel like they are in the living room,” she said, “just to have a very welcoming experience.” Please and Thank You certainly does that.

From the minute you step off the hustle and bustle of East Market Street, you’re welcomed by a comforting oasis. Maybe it is the old fashion record player turning along in the “listening station”. Maybe it’s the delightful barista that is thrilled to see you. Maybe it is the chocolate chip cookie that seems to melt in your mouth, or possibly sipping on one of the best lattes in Louisville.

“I felt like we needed a coffee shop in the East Market district. There is just none around here,” Vaughn said. New businesses are coming to the area and it has prompted Vaughn to extend hours, with the coffee shop

being open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday through Friday. Vaughn opened the coffee shop in May of 2011. She hoped she could attract some of the local business people that are within walking distance. “I’m a big local coffee shop person and I feel you support your local coffee shop,” she said. “I think you should come here if you can walk or you work around here.”

Among some of the specialties on the menu, Please and Thank You has a “Ganache Latte” that is a delicious mocha latte drink. Priced at $3.50, it’s what you would expect to pay at an average coffee shop. On the food side, they offer a delicious toasted pressed sandwich, made with sliced mozzarella, basil pesto, pepperonata and focaccia. It is a bit pricy at $7.50, but the taste makes up for it.

If you ever feel the need to pick up a tone arm and sit the needle on a record, Please and Thank You has you covered. “You can’t find a lot of great vinyl places in this city.” From new hip-hop artist Tyler the Creator, to the smooth sounds of Bon Iver, Please and Thank you has a great selection. They even have a sound proof room, where you can drop the needle on the record if you heart desires. The prices of the records don’t put too much of a pinch on the pocket either. Most records range from $10-$20.

Overall, Please and Thank has great coffee and an amazing atmosphere. There is a certain relaxed vibe about the place. “It feels really good in here on a Saturday afternoon… It’s full, it’s bustling,” Vaughn said.

Please and Thank You is open from Monday 8 a.m. – 2 p.m., Tuesday 7 a.m. – 3 p.m., Wednesday to Friday 7 a.m. – 9 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. With it being only a short five minute drive away from the Belknap campus, you should
definitely check it out.
