When Mary Huebner packed her bags to head to campus, she was sure to bring a little bit of home – two stuffed cow pillows she sleeps with every night.

“I thought it would help me be less homesick,” said Huebner, a freshman undecided major from Louisville who moved into Miller Hall last week.

Huebner moved in on Aug. 17, the first day to check into dorms and University of Louisville Properties for the fall semester, being one of 1788 students to move into campus housing and ULP on that day.

Like many other parents helping their freshmen children move in on campus, Huebner’s mother, Shannon, said it would be hard to see her daughter go. Shannon said it seems like yesterday when she was helping her older daughter, senior communication major Grechen Huebner, pack for U of L.

“It’s really hard to see both of them leave home, but I’m really proud that they’re both making their way in the world,” Shannon said.

Volunteers from UPS were on hand on move in day, to help freshmen students move into Unitas, Threlkeld and Miller Halls.

“We do this every year,” said Tina Chesher, human resources recruiter for UPS. “Things are running smoothly, but it’s a real team effort.”

Chesher said UPS sponsored volunteers, dollies and other help for move in day.

Some campus organizations, like Baptist Campus Ministry, also sent volunteers.

“We just try to be a friendly face,” said Justin Carden, a senior cultural anthropology major and BCM volunteer. “We welcome them to campus and help them move in.”

Students were also allowed to move in to their dorms anytime during the Aug. 18 to 21 U of L Welcome Weekend. Michelle Massey, Associate Director of Housing, said the first day is usually the busiest, especially when it comes to traffic.

On average, people were given 20 minutes to unload, she said. Then, they were directed to the Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium lot to park.

“Things have gone pretty smoothly, though,” Massey said. “Really, it’s thanks to the tons of volunteers. Let’s hope the rest of move in goes as well.”
