President: Travis Gault

A doctoral student with multiple degrees, Gault has distinguished himself as a nontraditional candidate in this year’s election. As the only candidate running as an independent, Gault believes his extensive experiences at U of L will better suit him for the position of SGA president.

“I’m trying to fix the obvious things that other candidates have left behind,” said Gault, who is currently seeking his doctorate in electrical engineering. “You’ve heard campaign promises about how things are going to change, but I want to make those promises a reality.”

Among the top issues on Gault’s platform is the need to implement fixed tuition rates at U of L. According to Gault, this is already in place with the university’s MBA programs. With Gault’s proposal, students would be charged the same amount of tuition per year throughout their college career. Any tuition increases would only affect incoming freshmen.

Additionally, Gault is an advocate of completely eliminating the plus-minus system from U of L academics.

“U of L implemented the plus-minus system in the 2003-2004 academic year because it wanted to raise the standards of the university,” said Gault. “But it becomes very difficult for various professors to grade students on such a minute scale. What warrants an A-minus as opposed to an A-plus? A lot of it is subjective and, honestly, unfair.”

With leadership experience as the former president of Triangle Fraternity, the former president and constitutional author of the Inter-Fraternity Council, and a current representative for the Graduate Student Council, Gault said that his experiences will lend strength to his candidacy.
