Dr. Jeffrey Callen, the chief of the Division of Dermatology at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, has accomplished much in his field. For all of his accomplishments and contributions to the medical world of dermatology, Callen has been chosen by the Medical Dermatology Society to receive the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award.
Apart from being the current chair of the re-certification examination for the American Academy of Dermatology, associate editor of the Archives of Dermatology, vice president of the American Board of Dermatology, and a member of the board of directors of the American Dermatologic Association, Callen has served on many other boards and written many publications in his area of expertise.
In 1988, Callen was named both a U of L professor and the chief of the Division of Dermatology. Since 1988, he has served on the board of directors of the Dermatology Foundation, Medical Dermatology Society and Association of Professors of Dermatology. He has lectured at over 187 universities, spoken at 162 medical society meetings and participated in the writing of almost 700 various publications.
“It’s just nice to be recognized by my peers,” said Callen. “It’s always nice to have people say that you’ve made a valid contribution to your field. I’m just happy that my efforts in nonsurgical dermatology have made an impact. “
According to the Medical Dermatology Society, plans have already been made for the award ceremony.
“He will receive the award for his service at the Medical Dermatology Society’s annual meeting in New Orleans on Feb. 3,” said Tracy Martin, a representative of the Medical Dermatology Society. “Dr. Joseph Jorizzo of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C. will be presenting the award to Dr. Callen.”
According to the Medical Dermatology Society’s website, the purpose of the award is to recognize the many years of dedication Callen has provided for the overall field of dermatology, in respect to patient care, medical research and education.
