Kentucky State Fair
through 8/29
prices and event times vary

Greasy, deep-fried food every few steps, thousands of sweaty people from across the state singing karaoke and animals performing in shows – what a way to end the summer. The state fair will take place at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center. The main concert series features country artists such as Rascal Flatts, but students on a budget can take advantage of the other concert series free with admission. Other daily entertainment activities include pig racing, pie tasting contests and talent shows. For event schedules and more information, visit kystatefair.org.

ANDY WARHOL: “MYTHS”
through 10/31
Free

The Speed Art Museum is a hidden gem on the University of Louisville’s campus. Students and faculty walk past its doors on the way to class every day, but not many take the time to look around at its exhibits. Until the end of October, visitors can catch a glimpse of Andy Warhol’s “Myths” series of 10 screen prints of fictional characters from books, movies and television in the 1950s. The Speed is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Wednesday through Saturday (until 9 p.m. on Friday) and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

RSO FAIR
Tuesday, 8/24
11 a.m to 1 p.m.

Looking around campus, students are constantly reminded of the University of Louisville’s logo: “It’s Happening Here.” But through all of the confusion of first-week syllabuses, cookouts and move-ins, students wonder exactly what is happening when it comes to ways to get involved. Lucky for them, the RSO Fair takes place on the West Lawn. Many student organizations, groups and teams will have booths anxiously awaiting questions and sign-ups.

FACULTY GALA
8/29
8:00 p.m., $8 for students

Many students can attest to that singular fear of being embarrassed in class by a professor.  Music students quake in fear as they perform with sweaty palms and scratchy throats for their professors. Payback is sweet. Once a year, the tables are turned, when the professors perform for their students and the public in a variety of ensembles.  Works performed include those of Bach, Schubert, Chopin and Mozart. It never hurts to critique those who critique you. -Erica Blankenship
