Take a quick stroll down Eastern Parkway, just past Denny’s and through University Park Apartments. Students from the University of Louisville may find themselves at the front door of Nord’s Bakery. The warm, yellow walls and antique wooden tables might lead some customers to believe that they have just entered their grandmother’s kitchen. However, students may be hard-pressed to find a grandmother that can bake better than Nord’s.
Home of the maple bacon doughnut, Nord’s combines the best breakfast foods into one single pastry. Though the image of a fried slice of bacon resting on a long john is strange to look at, it is every bit as delicious as it is odd. Salty, slightly smoky and laden with sugar, the maple bacon doughnut has a flavor similar to that of a sausage and pancake breakfast sandwich and is a definite must-try for first-time visitors.
Other pastries worth noting include the glazed French Fry doughnut and the chocolate covered long john.
Located on the corner of Atwood Street and Preston Street, Nord’s Bakery remains in close proximity to campus – a perk for those who live close enough to walk or ride their bikes to class. Commuting students, however, may find it difficult to find a parking space along the bakery’s corner, which can become crowded during the early morning hours.
But the parking situation is never bad enough that it should deter students from paying a visit to the bakery. With most doughnuts costing less than a dollar, the low price of the sugary goodness is well worth the trip.
Students who decide to dine at Nord’s Bakery for breakfast may find it disappointing that while the doughnut shop contains a wide variety of sweet delicacies, it only serves ordinary black coffee. However, the bakery is conveniently located next door to Sunergos Coffee, a cafe ripe with various types of java.
Sunergos Coffee and Nord’s Bakery each follow their own confectionary niche, complementing one another along the way. Nord’s offers an array of cookies, doughnuts and other baked goods, but remains short on coffee variety. Meanwhile, Sunergos provides much-needed caffeine for early risers, but lacks pastries that students may need to help kick-start their days.
Although not quite your grandmother’s kitchen, the sweet aroma and the rural southern ambience of the doughnut shop makes Nord’s Bakery the next best thing.
