Following two games on the road, the University of Louisville women’s basketball team, led by senior forward Angel McCoughtry, will have home games against their next two Big East opponents.
Louisville’s 20-2 start is the best in school history and their 7-1 record is the best since they’ve joined the Big East. Even after their 14 game win streak was snapped at the University of Connecticut, the Cardinals still sit in second in the Big East. With a rout of the Friars of Providence College, the Cardinals are still poised to be a threat in the Big East.
The Cards will face a University of Syracuse squad that stands 14-7 overall with a Big East record of 3-5 that has dropped four out of their last five games. Syracuse sophomore guard Erica Morrow leads four players in double figures with 16.9 points per game. Senior guard Chandrea Jones is second in scoring with 16.2 points per game followed by two junior guards Nicole Michael and Juanita Ward at 13.6 points per game and 10 points per game respectively. Jones also leads the team in rebounds with 8.5 per game.
The Orange of Syracuse average 71 points and 42.6 rebounds per game. For the season they are shooting 38.8 percent from the field and 28.9 percent from three-point range.
Following a battle with Syracuse, the Cardinals will face West Virginia University. The Mountaineers are 12-8 overall and hold a 1-6 record in the Big East this season. The Mountaineers of West Virginia as a team average 65.5 points per game to go along with 40.6 rebounds per game. The team shoots 40.8 percent from the field and 32.8 perfect from behind the arc. West Virginia has lost three of their last five contests.
Three players for the Mountaineers score in double figures. Leading all scorers is junior guard Takish Granberry who averages 15.9 points per game and 7.3 rebounds per game. Freshman guards Liz Repella and Sarah Miles round out their top scorers. Repella is second with 15.5 points and 8.1 rebounds, while Miles is averaging 11.6 points per game and grabs 4.9 rebounds. Repella’s 8.1 rebounds make her stand out from the rest of the Mountaineers.
