Speed School offers graduate students more evening classes By Sarah V. Dailey

Night classes have forever been a blessing on students at the university who have jobs during the day but want to further their education. Speed Scientific School, starting this fall, will be offering Master level coursework in engineering, which for years the bulk of the classes have only been offered during the day.

“Last year all six departments that make up Speed Scientific School agreed to offer coursework classes in the evening,” said Speed Scientific School Dean Dr.Thomas Hanley. What this entails is the opportunity for people who have engineering degrees to work their 9-5 job and still be able to get their Masters degree. Many students, when taking evening classes, take one class a semester because that is all that would be offered. This would result in the accumulation of 9 hours a year. With the new program, students will now be able to take more than one class a semester and get through the Masters program faster.

“We are trying to find ways to get people through college,” said Hanley.Speed Scientific School students pursuing a degree in chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, industrial engineering, and mechanical engineering, as well as engineering management, will have Masters coursework offered to them in the evening.

“As an older student who is responsible for financing all living expenses including tuition, night courses in the Masters program will allow me the opportunity to further my education while meeting all my financial obligations,” said Lori Shindlebower, a senior chemical engineering major.Current students who are pursueing their Bachlors in Science will have to make a sacrafice by taking evening classes, due to the accomadations being made for those in the new Masters program.

“I have been responsible for my living expenses since freshman year, and it is difficult to find a well paying job when you can only work second shift,” said Viller. “If it means that I have to take classes in the evening because of the new program, then it will be worth it when I am in the program earning my Masters and working.”

“This is the first year we’ve offered this and we are anxious to see how this all works,” said Hanley.
