Student Life Awards announced

Awards recognizes outstanding students

The third annual Student Life Awards were announced at a luncheon held at the Red Barn on April 11th, 2002. According to Assistant Director of Student Life Joni Burke, the awards were divided into two categories.

The first part of the program honored individual students at U of L who had already received honor from the school in another capacity. Second was the recognition of special programs and activities/groups. All groups were given the opportunity to apply for an award.

The following are the student honorees as announced at the luncheon.

Mr. and Miss Cardinal: Gene Massey, biology major, and Shannon Rickett, management major.

SAB Executive Member of the Year: Andrea Olsen.

SGA Senator of the Year: Karen Nation.

Disability Resource Center/Kappa Sigma award for outstanding academic achievement and personal growth and development: Jim Chambliss.

Disabled Student of the Year: Ronald Asa Williams.

ACCESS-Adult Learner Award Winners: graduate student Donna L. Dodge and undergraduate student Yvette F. Cabrera-Rojas.

Bonner Leader of the Year: Angelina Wedding, who created an Environmental Literacy Leadership Project for her young readers called "Raising Environmental Awareness."

America Reads Tutor of the Year: LeeAnna Bledsaw.

Most outstanding SOSer- Student Orientation Staff: Beth Sherman.

SOS Rookie of the Year: Elizabeth Sawyer.

NCC of the year, National Communications Coordinator in the state: Carlous Yates.

Greek Man and Woman of the year: Gene Massey and Beth Coppock.

Outstanding Greek Chapter Presidents: Adrienne Worsham of Sigma Kappa Sorority and to Matt Chanda of Triangle Fraternity and Chalynn Heeter, NPHC of Sigma Gamma Rho.

The next awards went to groups/programs.

Outstanding Education Program award: Triangle Fraternity and Speed School Student Council for Leadership Advantage.

Best New Program or Initiative: Louisville Resident Student Association Hall Council and the Louisville Resident Assistants.

Outstanding Marketing Initiative: School of Music Student Council.

Collaboration Award: Student Activities Board and the Resident Student Association for the Foam Party.

Humanitarian Award: Jennifer Barnett.

Outstanding Advisor of the Year: Rene Costanza.

Outstanding New Organization: P.A.U.L.-the Paralegal Association of the University of Louisville.

Outstanding Student Organization of the Year: SAB-Student Activities Board.

Joni Burke remarked that "the Outstanding Group Award was probably the highlight of the day."
