Ramsey on recruitment tour across Kentucky

President Dr. James R. Ramsey is traveling the Commonwealth as part of U of L’s 2009 outreach program.  Ramsey is stopping at high schools around Kentucky, making 10 stops in eastern, western and central Kentucky, and several more in Louisville. 
Ramsey is telling students that the University of Louisville is “recruiting students based on quality instead of quantity,” according to U of L’s Web site.
This week, Ramsey will be stopping at Nelson County, Bardstown, Meade County and Breckinridge County high schools, along with other alumni events along the way.

IdeaFestival will feature U of L professors

IdeaFestival, a four day event bringing world class artists, scholars, writers, chefs and others, is this week.  Over forty presenters will be in Louisville for this annual event.
The University of Louisville is a sponsor of IdeaFestival, and students may buy an all access pass for $215.  Day passes and individual passes are also available.
Speakers include best-selling author A.J. Jacobs, who will talk about reading the Encyclopedia Britannica in a year, and Daniel Roth a senior writer at “Wired” magazine.
Nat Irvin, a U of L business management professor and Lee Dugatkin, a U of L biology professor will also give presentations.

U of L’s carbon footprint getting smaller

The University of Louisville’s board of trustees voted last week to allow work to begin on a massive project to reduce its carbon emissions.
U of L has given Siemens Building Technologies Inc. a performance contract worth $21.7 million over the next 13.5 years.  As part of the program, campus heating, ventilation and air conditioning units will be replaced, and more efficient lighting will be installed.
Over the life of the contract, U of L is expected to save $31 million.  U of L will also reduce its energy consumption by more than 20 percent and its natural gas and coal use by nearly 40 percent each, according to U of L’s Web site.

U of L to host 2012 NCAA basketball tourney

The University of Louisville will host the first two rounds of the 2012 NCAA men's basketball tournament in the new downtown arena.  The games will be played on March 15 and 17.
Lousiville's downtown arena is due to open in the fall of 2010, when U of L will play its first basketball games there.  The arena is expected to cost $238 million and seat 22,000 people.
Louisville last hosted an NCAA men's basketball event in 1991.

Team trivia night in the Red Barn Wednesday


There will be a team trivia night in the Red Barn Wed., Sept. 23.  Teams will be limited to six participants, and entry is one dollar per team.  Entry fees go toward the grand prize pool.  There will be seven ten-minute rounds, with the highest-scoring team taking home the pot.
